St. Joseph Bay is a sizable body of water on the Gulf Coast of Florida. It is approximately 17 miles long and 6 miles wide. 73,000 acres of some of the richest fishing habitat in the Florida Panhandle. Bay fishing include spotted seatrout, redfish or red drum, flounder and many others. The Bay is very popular for boaters during scallop season in late summer and early fall. Wading out in the bay and using a cast net you can catch many of the same fish. Walking into the clear water is like wading into your own private aquarium. St. Joseph Bay with soft, grass flats and clear shallow water, an adventurers dream.
The sea grass that covers most of the sea bed allows many fish species to thrive as it is their primary food source. This provides significant recreational fishing opportunities. Simmons Bayou revolves around fishing, which makes it an angler’s paradise.
With such a range of fishing grounds to offer, means there are plenty of fish to catch. This whole area of the Panhandle has world-class fishing opportunities.
Scalloping is popular in these parts, is an understatement. with the St. Joseph Bay seabed full of these delicious crustaceans. When the season hits, and it strikes in July and August, sounds like a summer vacation to me. Be sure to fill your net with something tasty to take back to shore and enjoy!
All around the Gulf of Mexico, one inshore fish rules the roost – the Redfish. They reach an incredible size all along the Florida Panhandle. St Joseph’s Bay is full of these prized creatures and, what’s even better, they’re always biting.
Red Snapper is a short season summer fish making them an elusive catch for all anglers. But they do run here.
Bring your own kayak or rent one. One of the popular fishing methods in Port St Joe is fishing aboard a kayak. The calm waters of Saint Joseph Bay make it an ideal location to explore on a kayak. It allows you to access shallow areas and provides a more stealthy approach to get close to the fish. It’s a great way to target species like redfish, trout, and flounder in the bay.
